This time of year is always a special time of year for me and my best friend and assistant photographer, Donna. Our birthdays are only two days apart, so every year we designate a special birthday show for ourselves, in February, and this year's show would be an incredible journey under the Hudson for a celebration of Death/Thrash with my favorite band of all, NAPALM DEATH, and German Thrash Legends KREATOR. F**k Yeah!!!!My best friend, my son, NYC, and freakin' Barney and Mille!!!!Happy Birthday to us!!!!!
It was Sunday, so we could park at the train station without having to pay, which was good cause it was FREAKIN' COLD!!!!!!! We always train it under the Hudson instead of driving and then walk to Times Square from Penn Station. Not far, but when it's 15 freakin' degrees with a gusting wind......well..B.B. Kings was nice and toasty when we got there, to say the least. My excitement was unbearable!!! If you know Tgod when Napalm is coming, then you'll know the torture I've put friends and family members through all week. We walked in and the first band was already on. I had heard them from outside and didn't realize till I walked in that it was a girl singing. Brutal voice. Didn't like the look though. EMO. Uhh Oh. The girl started talking about how we are the future and have to save our environment and Holy crap!!!SCREAMO. It sucked. Everybody was laughing. Shiiiaaattt! This is the new home of DEATH on the east coast. The only thing we have to save our environment from is stupid hardcore screamo kickdancers. The next band sucked too, so I'm not even going to waste any more words. The Napalm Gods were about to slaughter NYC. Again it was a good, good crowd at B.B.'s. Me and Donna, front and center. Napalm filed on stage and the crowd erupted. Good Napalm crowd. I looked at Donna and we high-fived and wished each other Happy F**king Birthday! Then, Napalm exploded into "The Silence Is Deafening." "Instinct Of Survival", "Unchallenged Hate". The roof was rattling!! The pit was swirling!!. Non-stop brutality. Napalm rifles them off, one after another. Relentlessly!!! "Continuing War On Stupidity', "Vegetative State", "SUF-FER T-H-E CHILDREN"!!! Then my favorite song of all time, "Breed To Breath", played double time!!. I was out of my freeeeekin' mind!!! No stopping here. Another favorite from the Utopia Banished album, "WORLD-KEEPS-TURNING"!! New stuff "The Code Is Red....Long Live The Code." Amazing!! The Cryptic Slaughter cover "Lowlife". Back to the Scum album and a medley of the oldest stuff and a finish with "Nazi Punks" and "Siege Of Power". I was soaked. Out of all the times I've seen Napalm Death, this was the best. Dripping sweat!! But, there was a cool breeze from above, where the roof once was. But the fun was only half over. This was the first time that I've seen Napalm where I didn't leave after their set. They always open for some band that I don't care much for, which is good cause I'm always wiped out. No exception here, only the workout was far from over!! Me and Donna gave each other a big sweaty hug and knuckled down for German Thrash Legends KREATOR!!!!
KRE-A-TOR! KRE-A-TOR! chants were abound and in a cloud of smoke Mille and co. emerged and blasted into "Enemy of God". It kicked freakin' ass!!!!Followed by "Impossible Brutality" and "Extreme Aggression". It was phenomenal!!! They were blowin' out the walls!! "Awakening Of The Gods", "Coma of Souls". The pit was surfin' and stompin'!! Let me tell you, MILLE CAN F***ING PLAY!!! "Violent Revolution" was completely sick!!! My favorite new one, "Suicide Terrorist", "Pleasure to Kill", ahhhhhhhhhh!!!! "Phoooooobia!!" Freakin' nuts!!!! The entire crowd was wiped out and dripping sweat!! "Betrayer" finished us off, before the crowd stomped and chanted till they came back on and annihilated what was left of us, with "Flag Of Hate" and "Tormentor".
So another year has passed and another birthday journey for the records. Gonna be a good, good year. I can feel it in my (aching) bones!!
