Six o'clock. Hmmm. I went to bed early last nite to get a good night sleep for what was going to be a long day today. Here I am up at six. Groggy - eyed I walked into the bathroom to take the morning piss. The window, which is right next to the toilet, was open and a nice gust of wind blew in. It had been a week of high, hot, wet, sticky Jersey humidity, but this nice cool fresh gust of air told me that, like the forecasters predicted, the humidity was going to lift. It felt good. I breathed it in. Then, I looked down and realized that the gust of air was blowing the curtains in over the toilet and I was pissing on them.
I didn't care. I was thinking of Lamb Of God, Unearth, Chimaira. And freaking GWAR!!!!!!! Today is The Sounds of the Underground. It's six o'clock in the morning. I'm going to see GWAR. And I'm pissing on the bathroom curtains.
Yeah. The makings of a very special day.
I gathered up the kiddies,(my son and his friends) and my best friend Donna, popped in "Ashes of the Wake", and began what would be the best day of the year, as well as one of the most memorable days of my concert-going life. The show was outdoors in the Starland Ballroom parking lot. The weather was gorgeous. Since the show was in the parking lot, everyone had to park a mile down the road in a big field. They bussed us all over in yellow school buses. It was awesome. The Jersey kids were well behaved, and orderly. Well, except for me. My son and friends caught an earlier bus, and me and Donna hung back cause the photo passes were a little late in arriving to the table. When we boarded our bus, the driver was jamming Led Zepp and jumping up and down in his seat. Hell yeah. Orderly my ass. We were going to be the loudest bus. While the kiddies were lined up in an orderly fashion in front of The Starland, you could hear our Tgod incited GWAR! GWAR! GWAR! chants eminating out the windows of the bus, all the way up Jernee Mill Rd. GWAR chants. People hangin' out the windows screaming. Yeah. We were the loudest bus.
THE RED CHORD was the first band, kicking off the festivities, but I was still waiting in the huge line to get into the place. It certainly didn't look like the Starland I was used to seeing. It was unbelievable!! A huge stage in the middle of the parking lot with tents all around. When we finally got in, DEVILDRIVER was coming on, so I slapped on my photo pass and rushed up front and around the barrier. All of a sudden, I'm there right under Dez's microphone and DEVILDRIVER is pounding. F**k yeah!! I started jumping around like a maniac and taking pics. The festivities had begun!!! Dez got a huge circle pit going, so I ran back around the barrier and jumped in. I bumped into my son as I was whirring around and kids were already wrestling in a muddy puddle in the middle of the pit. It was the shiiiiaaaaatt and it was barely 12:30!!
A LIFE ONCE LOST was next on the bill. I went back around the barrier and up to the stage. Thank you Jensen from Adrenaline PR for hookin' me up with the photo pass. It was cool cause I already knew most of the security from The Starland, being it my home away from home. A LIFE ONCE LOST was awesome and this party was going strong. ALL THAT REMAINS came on next and I remained up front to get pics of them. They kicked ass and had the bass player for UNEARTH filling in for them. I needed some refreshments after that and set out to check the scene out. Man, what a scene!! People were high fivin' me and shakin' my hand cause I had this shirt on that I spray painted Tgod and 666metal.com on the front and EMO SUX-Harm doesn't in big red letters on the back. It was cool. The guys from Chimaira were hangin' at their tent so me and Donna met them and got pics. I love Chimaira. I had to get back up front though cause MADBALL was next. You know Tgod loves the NYC hardcore. They didn't disappoint either!! What a great morning!! Hell, only the beginning. A few more hours and GWAR!!! The line to meet them had already started forming at their tent , so me and the gang took a spot and waited.......
